R Kingfishers

🐦 Welcome to cool KINGFISHERS!

Dear Parents and Carers,

A huge and heartfelt welcome to our Reception class page! We are so excited to begin this special journey with you and your child.

Here you’ll find information about our topics each term, along with little snapshots of life in Year R — where curiosity is celebrated, confidence grows, and every day is filled with discovery.

I am truly looking forward to working closely with you and your child this year. They are going to love being part of Kingfishers Class! It’s a year full of imagination, independence, new friendships and proud moments. If you ever have a question or concern — no matter how small — please do come and chat with me. We’re in this together.

Kind regards,

Ellie Smith

🐦 A Day in the Life of a Kingfisher

Our school day runs from 8:45am to 3:20pm, and every day is carefully planned to balance structure, play, creativity and learning.

Here’s what a typical day looks like:

    • 8:30am – Doors open. Children come in, choose their lunch and settle into a hand gym activity to get those fingers ready for writing.

    • 8:55am – Wake and Shake! We get moving and energised for the day ahead.

    • 9:00am – Calendar and number work.

    • 9:10am – Maths

    • 9:30am – Snack and social time.

    • 10:00am – Rainbow Time (child-initiated learning). This is where children explore, create, investigate and follow their interests.

    • 11:00am – Phonics - building early reading step by step.

    • 11:45am – Lunch.

    • 1:00pm – Register

    • 1:10pm – Topic or Literacy.

    • 1:30pm – Rainbow Time continues.

    • 2:45pm – Circle time

    • 3.00pm – Story and songs to end our day together.

    • 3:20pm – Home time.

We place huge value on child-led learning. Rainbow Time allows children to revisit skills, deepen their understanding and develop independence in a way that feels meaningful and exciting to them.

🌟 Helpful Reminders

To help everything run smoothly:

  • P.E. Day: Tuesday – please send your child in wearing their P.E. kit.
  • Please bring a clearly labelled water bottle every day.

  • All uniform should be clearly labelled with your child’s full name.

  • Book bags should come into school daily — we have a safe place to store them.

  • Fruit is available daily, but you’re welcome to send a healthy snack if your child prefers their own.

  • Reading books are sent home on Tuesdays and changed weekly (please write in the reading journal so we know they’ve been read).

  • As children begin learning letter sounds, these will be sent home regularly to practise together.

  • Library day: Monday
