  • Class Welcomes

    Wed 20 Sep 2017 Head

We would like to invite parents to attend our ‘Class Welcomes’ after school on the 20th and 21st September at 5.00pm.

These are great opportunities to meet your child’s new class teacher for the first time and to learn a little more about what the year ahead will look like for your child. You will hear about the daily routines, expectations around homework and what topic areas the children will be studying. The session should take around 30 minutes. We would encourage attendance for all parents but for those pupils in the key national curriculum assessment years, 2 and 6 (Swallows, Swifts and Kestrels), please note that we will be looking at what’s involved with the statutory assessment procedures or SATs as well.

All information will shortly be on school website here: www.bitternemanor.co.uk/class-pages/

Don’t forget you will get a chance to have an individual consultation later in the term with class teachers. These dates are on our calendar already and appointment letters will be sent out shortly before.

20th Sept Class Welcome Evening: 5.00pm Swallows, Rooks, Owls, Robins

21st Sept Class Welcome Evening: 5.00pm Kestrels, Swifts, Nightingales

Kingfishers don’t require a session just yet! We look forward to seeing you then.

  • How to respond to tragic news events?

    Thu 25 May 2017 Deputy

Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and the community in Manchester after the horrific and tragic events earlier in the week. We are aware that some children may be upset and quite frightened by the news. Therefore, we have linked below to some resources and guidance (published by different agencies) that may support parents if your child raises it and you need support:

Advice if you’re upset by the news (Newsround)

Supporting children worried about terrorism (NSPCC)

Responding to children and young people affected by the media coverage of the incident in Manchester (Winston’s Wish)

Supporting children after a frightening event (Leaflet from David Trickey, Consultant Clinical Child Psychologist

How to explain the horror of terrorism to your children (Telegraph)

  • Local Authority SEND Inspection

    Thu 02 Feb 2017 Deputy

Inspection of Southampton local area’s effectiveness in identifying and meeting the needs of, and improving outcomes for, children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities from 6 February 2017 to 10 February 2017

Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will carry out jointly an inspection of your local area. Under the Children and Families Act 2014, the government placed new duties on the local health, social and education services that provide for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The inspection will evaluate how effectively the local area:

    1. identifies the needs of children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities
    2. meets the needs of these children and young people so that their outcomes and chances of participating fully in society improve.

The views of children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, and the views of their parents and carers will be gathered during visits to a number of early years settings, schools, colleges and specialist services. These views are critical to the inspection process. During the inspection, Ofsted and CQC inspectors will be keen to speak to as many children and young people and their parents and carers as possible. Inspectors will not be visiting your child’s provision..

The inspection will also include an online webinar to allow other Southampton parents and carers to contribute. The webinar will take place at 6.30pm on Monday 6 February. It will led by the lead inspector, who will ask parents and carers about their views and experiences on how effectively Southampton is fulfilling the above responsibilities.

If you would like to take part in this webinar then please follow this internet link http://bit.ly/2kLeCLASENDSouthampton

While we understand that many parents and carers may have views on their experience that extend before the introduction of the reforms in September 2014, it is important that this date is used as the start for gathering evidence about the impact of the reforms. We would also like parents and carers to understand that we will not be able to follow up or comment upon individual cases.

Information on local area duties toward children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities can be found on the Department for Education’s website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/send-guide-for-parents-and-carers.

    Yours sincerely

    Matthew Barnes

    Her Majesty’s Inspector

  • Paired Reading Project Workshop

Wed 11 Jan 2017 Inclusion Leader

The paired reading project is a brand new project that we are launching, with the support of the Virtual School.  It involves paired reading at school and at home, using a strategy that is known to have a real impact on pupils' reading confidence and progress.

Initially, we will be trialling the project with a few pupils in Years 3, 2 and 1 so please look out for a letter inviting the parents / carers of these pupils to attend a workshop on 11th January 2017 at 8.45am.

    What is paired reading?

    • Flexible fun way for you to help your child.

    • Easy to do, little and often.

    • Children cannot fail.

    • No one gets confused, worried or bad tempered about reading.

    • Children have more interest, confidence and understanding with reading.

    • The project has been well researched and works!
