Year 1
In Year 1, children start the autumn term with Everyday materials, linking this learning to the design and
technology project Shade and Shelter. In the Humans project, they learn about parts of the human body and
those associated with the senses. In the spring project Seasonal changes, they learn broadly about seasonal
changes linked to weather, living things and day length. They revisit some of this learning in the following
summer term project Plants. They finish with the project Animals, linking back to their knowledge about body
parts and senses and identifying commonalities.
Autumn Term - Materials
We are still awaiting further guidance for this unit.
Spring Term - Seasonal Changes
During this term, we learn about the seasons, seasonal changes and typical seasonal weather and events. We learn about measuring the weather and the role of a meteorologist. We begin to learn about the science of day and night and recognise that the seasons have varying day lengths in the UK. We will embed this learning through Science lessons and across other curriculum areas, such as Writing and Art. Our continuous provision area will also be changed every week to consolidate prior learning and allow us to continue to explore these new concepts independently.
The objectives covered for this unit are:
I can observe changes across the four seasons.
- I can describe, following observation, how plants and animals change over time (focus on seasonal changes)
- I can observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
- I can investigate weather using toys, models or simple equipment
The working scientifically objectives we cover for this unit are:
- I can observe closely, using simple equipment
- I can gather and record data to help in answering questions
- I can use my observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions
- I can ask simple questions and recognise that they can be answered in different ways
- I can perform simple tests

Summer Term 1 - Plant Parts
In the Plant Parts project, we will learn that plants are living things that grow from seeds or bulbs. We will revisit the concept of seasonal change, observing how trees and other plants change with the seasons, particularly from winter to spring. We will observe, photograph and identify various plants growing in and around the school grounds. We will continue our learning by learning the parts of plants. We will explore where new plants come from and learn the names of some plants that grow from seeds and bulbs. We will learn about the parts of leaves, making comparisons. We will ask and answer scientific questions about the importance of plants to animals, including humans. We will observe how their chosen plant has changed over time and record their findings.
The objectives covered for this unit are:
- I can identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees
- I can identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.
The working scientifically objectives we will cover are:
- I can use my observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions.
- I can gather and record data to help in answering questions.
- I can identify and classify.
- I can observe closely, using equipment.
- I can ask simple questions and recognise that they can be answered in different ways.
