School Nursing Team

We work closely with the School Nursing Team to support the health and wellbeing of all pupils throughout their time in school. The School Nursing Service is part of the Public Health Nursing Service and aims to promote good physical, emotional and developmental health so that every child can reach their full potential.

The team works with children, families, schools and other professionals across Southampton to provide advice, early support and health guidance when needed.

Who Are the School Nursing Team?

You and your child may be supported by:

  • Public Health Nurses – Registered nurses with specialist public health training. Each Southampton school has a named nurse.

  • School Health Nurses – Qualified nurses with additional skills to support children and families in school settings.

  • School Nurse Support Workers – Healthcare professionals working under the supervision of registered nurses.

  • No Limits Practitioners – Specialists who support young people’s wellbeing as part of the wider team.

How the School Nursing Team Supports Families

The School Nursing Team offers support from Reception through to the end of full-time education. They provide advice, guidance and targeted support including:

  • School entry health reviews and Year 6 growth monitoring (National Child Measurement Programme)

  • Advice around healthy lifestyles and maintaining a healthy weight

  • Support with growth and development concerns

  • Help with sleep routines and healthy habits

  • Enuresis (bedwetting) and toileting support

  • Emotional wellbeing advice

  • Support for children with medical or complex health needs, including individual care plans in school

  • Health education and promotion

  • Safeguarding and child protection support alongside other agencies

Half-termly School Nurse clinics are held in school, where parents and carers can discuss concerns such as:

  • fussy eating

  • sleep routines

  • toileting

  • growth or development worries

  • healthy lifestyles and wellbeing

How to Access Support

If you have concerns about your child’s health or wellbeing, you can:

  • Speak to Kim Abbott

  • Contact the School Nursing Team directly

  • Attend a school nurse drop-in clinic

  • Ask another health professional or your GP to refer you
