Year 6
Autumn Term
The children will learn indoor athletics skills which will enable them to take part in the increasing number of KS2 events held by the Southampton Games Organisers. Skills taught and practised will include running, jumping, skipping, throwing and catching.
Invasion Games will consist of Basketball, Hockey and Football and teach children the sport specific skills they need to take part such as passing, shooting, attacking and defending. There will be an increased focus on tactics such as when to attack and how to defend as well as evaluating their own and others' performances.
Spring Term
Children will focus on sending and receiving through use of throwing and catching. Games such as Netball will help to apply these skills.
Gym Skills will be revised and progressed from the previous year. Dance will be linked with the Year 6 topic based on Polar Exploration and sequenced over a series of lessons.
Summer Term
Outdoor Athletics will build on previous learnt skills from the Autumn Term and begin building further skills. This links in with summer events such as the Southampton City Athletics Championships and School Sports Day. Tennis will allow the children the opportunity to apply their racket skills.
Rounders and Cricket will focus on striking and fielding and links back to sending and receiving learnt in the previous term.
