Spring 1 Topic

Polar Regions

This project teaches children about the characteristics and features of polar regions, including the North and South Poles, and includes a detailed exploration of the environmental factors that shape and influence them.

 Writing

 

In Writing, children will use The Last Bear to develop their writing skills, including using figurative language in log entries, adverbs for possibility and frequency in reports, and writing a newspaper article based on the story. In Can We Save the Tiger?, they will research endangered animals to write an information text, use effective punctuation in a persuasive speech, and develop a consistent, evidence-based argument.

 

Reading

 

In Reading, children will explore Polar Bear Explorer’s Club by making predictions, retrieving information, understanding characters’ thoughts, and summarising the story. Using On the Origin of Species, they will focus on vocabulary variation, sequencing events, and inferring feelings and impressions from the text.

Maths

 

In Spring 1, Year 6 will be focusing on ratio, algebra and decimals in maths. Children will learn to use ratio to compare quantities, explore simple algebra to find unknown values, and build confidence in working with decimals in real-life contexts.

 

Science

 

During Spring 1, Year 6 will be studying classification and adaptation in science. Children will learn how living things are grouped based on their characteristics and explore how plants and animals are adapted to their environments to help them survive.

 

Foundation Subjects:

 

Geography

 

We will be using the Earth diagram to introduce or recap on the location of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and key lines of latitude and longitude, such as the equator and Prime Meridian.  The children will learn about polar landscapes, climate and day and night.  They will consider the impacts of climate change on natural resources and learn about the indigenous people.

 

Art

 

We will be looking at a range of different environmental artists this half term. This project teaches children about the genre of environmental art. They study how artists create artwork that addresses social and political issues related to the natural and urban environment. Children work collaboratively to create artwork with an environmental message.

 

Computing

 

In this unit on Networks, children will learn the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web, and explore what LANs and WANs are, including how we access the Internet in school. They will also reflect on major changes in technology that have taken place during their lifetime and compare these with the experiences of their teacher or another adult.

 

PE

 

In Dance, children will develop their technique by practising stag leaps and rebound jumps, as well as exploring relationships through partner work. They will compose and perform dance phrases inspired by the Haka, choosing appropriate dynamics and create short street dance sequences using freeze frames, performing confidently with a partner.

 

RE

 

In this unit, children will explore the concept of ritual and its significance in Islam. They will learn about the importance of rituals such as wudu and Eid-ul-Fitr, consider the value of ritual to Muslims, and reflect on what ritual means to them personally and how it can be used in their own lives and the lives of others.

 

 

PSHE

 

Children will explore Belonging to a Community, learning what prejudice and discrimination mean, how to recognise them, and strategies to safely challenge them. They will also examine stereotypes and their impact on attitudes toward different groups. In Media Literacy and Digital Resilience, children will learn the benefits of safe internet use, understand why people use social media and the associated risks, and explore how online content can be designed to influence emotions and encourage sharing.

 

How you can help at home?

 

As well as this, it is important that your child reads their book at least four times a week and brings it back to school so we can monitor their progress. Reading at home will help enhance children’s reading skills as well as their writing.  Homework will be given out every week and asked to be returned on the same day the following week. It will be linked to what your child has been learning about in school that week so discussing their home learning with them would be a great way to help with their speaking and listening skills too!
