Autumn Topics

             DYNAMIC DYNASTIES

Maths

During the Autumn term, we will spend the first few weeks focussing on Number and Place Value and understanding numbers up to 1,000,000 (one million). We will then move on to addition and subtraction and using formal written methods to solve calculations with increasingly larger numbers. After this, we will start looking at statistics. We will learn to construct and interpret charts, graphs and timetables.

After half term, we are going to look at multiplication and division and perimeter and area.

English

Throughout this term, most of our writing is going to come through our topic work. We will be writing poems, biographies and our own versions of other cultures.

Writing a narrative poem encourages children to develop their summarising skills and discuss how language and structure contribute to meaning and effect. Children could enhance the effect of their poems by using figurative language and expanded noun phrases. They could perform their poems with appropriate intonation and movement.

Writing a biography gives children the opportunity to select appropriate sentence structures and relevant details from their research. Children could use the information provided and other sources to write biographies about Cheng Tang in paragraphs. They could include relative clauses to provide additional detail.

Writing a story from another culture allows children to create characters, settings and plots that are rooted in the customs and traditions of another country. Children should also include a science fiction element encompassing time travel. They could use cohesive devices to link the plot and a variety of verb forms for clarity.

Science

In the first half term, we will be learning about The Earth and Space. This project teaches children about our Solar System and its spherical bodies. They describe the movements of Earth and other planets relative to the Sun, the Moon relative to Earth and the Earth's rotation to explain day and night.

After half term, we are going to be focussing on forces. This project teaches children about the forces of gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, with children exploring their effects. They learn about mechanisms, their uses and how they allow a smaller effort to have a greater effect.

History

Our History work this term all relates to the Ancient Chinese dynasties - in particular, The Shang Dynasty. This project teaches children about the history of ancient China, focusing primarily on the Shang Dynasty, and explores the lasting legacy of the first five Chinese dynasties, some of which can still be seen in the world today.

Art

For the first half term, we are going to be learning about colour theory and creating tints, tones and shades. This project teaches children about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and exploring mixing tints, shades and tones. They learn about significant landscape artworks and features of landscapes before using this knowledge to create landscape paintings.

DT

After half term, Our DT project will teach children about pnematics.

RE
For the first half term, we will be exploring the concept of incarnation to Christians. In Autumn 2, we will be studying Submission in the context of Islam.

PE

In PE we will be developing our skills with invasion games, specifically basketball. We will also be choreographing and performing our own dance and gymnastic routines.

Computing

In computing, we are learning to design, write and test simple programs that follow a sequence of instructions or allow a set of instructions to be repeated. After half term, we are learning to design, write and test simple programs with opportunities for selection, where a particular result will happen based on actions or situations controlled by the user.
