Autumn 2 Topic
Evacuee to Victory
This term, our topic is ‘Evacuee to Victory’, where the children will be learning all about World War II. They will take part in a range of engaging activities to deepen their understanding of this important period in history while continuing to build their knowledge and skills in core subjects such as English, Maths, and Science.
We are also very excited to be going on a school trip to The Milestones Museum, which will give the children a fantastic opportunity to experience what life was like during World War II.
Please find attached key information and an outline of what we will be covering in each subject. If you have any questions or would like further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Thank you for your continued support - we’re looking forward to another fantastic half term of learning!

English
Throughout the topic we will be looking at a range texts to focus in our reading and writing journeys and enhance the children's understanding of the events in World War 2.
In English, these will include the story ‘Anne Frank’ by Josephine Poole and 'Resist' by Tom Palmer.
The children will use their knowledge and understanding of the different texts to produce the following outcomes:
⮚ Diary entries
⮚ Character descriptions
⮚ Newspaper reports
⮚ Informal letter
Reading
Our reading journey will also focus on texts linked to our topic. The text, 'After the War: Auschwitz to Ambleside' will help us to explore the comprehension-based skills that the children need to develop as they move through year 6. Children will build upon skills such as making predictions, inferences, exploring interesting vocabulary. Unpicking the vocabulary in of passages of the texts will help build their comprehension skills and retrieving information they have read if useful practice in year 6. Further to this, the children will also be given the opportunity to read independently to encourage reading for pleasure among the class.
Maths
We continure the Autumn term by looking at fractions and devloping our understanding of mixed numbers, aswell as multiplying and dividing fractions of any integer. We will then move onto converting units and calcultaing with metric measures before finishing of the term by focussing on ratio.

PSHE
The children will be continuing to look at how important it is to respect themselves and others; valuing diversity and challenging discrimination and stereotypes.
How you can help at home
As well as this, it is important that your child reads their book at least four times a week and brings it back to school so we can monitor their progress. Reading at home will help enhance children’s reading skills as well as their writing. Homework will be given out every week and asked to be returned on the same day the following week. It will be linked to what your child has been learning about in school that week so discussing their home learning with them would be a great way to help with their speaking and listening skills too!
