Year 5

Autumn - Dynamic Dynasties.

Autumn term will be broken into two computing topics; Online Safety and Word Processing.

The online safety units within the Computing Scheme of Work provide in-depth coverage of computing related online safety aspects. This will also be covered through the children’s PSHE learning.

As a school we use Google services - during the word processing topic we will therefore use Google Docs to improve children's word processing. Children will learn what a word processing tool is for, and they can create a word processing document. They will learn to alter the look of the text and navigate around the document. They will learn how to find icons for the functionality that they wish to use.

Spring - Sow, Grow and Farm.

Within this term children will be doing the following topics; Coding and Databases.

The coding lessons in these units are structured around the PRIMM approach. The whole approach may take place during a lesson or series of lessons. Predict… what this code will do Run… the code to check your prediction Investigate… trace thought the code to see if you were correct Modify... the code to add detail, change actions/outcome Make… a new program that uses the same ideas in a different way.

During the databases unit children will explore; Searching Databases, Creating class databases and their own databases.

Summer - Ground-breaking Greeks.

The summer term is split into two terms; Game Creator and Concept Maps.

During the game creator, will create their own games. Children think about the component parts and design these as components in a theme rather than completely isolated parts. They will consider aspects such as the movement of the characters and goal objects to increase playability. When designing the game environment, they will do this with the end-user experience in mind.

The concept maps unit unit will give children a basic understanding of how to generate, visualise and connect their ideas and thought processes.
