Who am I?

What are we learning about?

The main focus during the first half term is to introduce the children to school life, making sure that they feel settled, safe and happy. During this topic, children will learn more about themselves and each other, such as their likes and dislikes. They will also have the opportunity to share information about their families and their interests.  This is also an ideal opportunity for the children to build positive relationships with each other and with the adults they work with in the classroom.


We will be working in Phase 1 of the Letters and Sounds phonic programme, focusing on developing speaking and listening skills through interactive songs and games.


We will read and discuss the text ‘I Will Never Not Ever Eat A Tomato’ by Lauren Child. This will allow the children to share their likes and dislikes in relation to the characters in the book.


We will also read the book ‘Something Else’ and focus on respecting the similarities and differences between us all.


Daily calendar and number songs with a focus on counting and number recognition.


Daily Maths activities will be set up for the children to use during MOOT (managing our own time) e.g. magnetic numbers, computer games, finding numbers in the sand.


Maths activities will relate to our topic, including ages and measuring.

Days of the week song

The children love listening to the days of the week song and then helping to change the calendar. We will ask them what the day is today, what the day was yesterday and ask them if they can guess what day tomorrow will be! This helps them to have a sense of time, to order events and to understand which days we have certain activities e.g. PE days.

Learning Opportunities

Our main focus will be providing activities to develop the children’s personal, social and emotional skills. We will do this by allowing the children to explore and become familiar with the classroom, the adults and the rest of the school.


We will spend time playing games to learn names and to get to know one another. We will play friendship games and focus on sharing.


We will focus on developing communication skills through show and tell in small groups.

The children will have the opportunity to paint a self-portrait and a family portrait and share with their new friends. They will develop their knowledge and understanding by learning about others and comparing similarities and differences.

How can you help?

As soon as possible, please can you send your child into school with a picture of when they were a baby. This is to create a discussion of what they can do now compared to when they were younger. We will create an interactive  ‘Who am I?’ display, which you can spend time looking at with your child when you bring them to school.

Please can you also send your child in, with an ‘all about me’ box or bag. This is for them to share for show and tell and can include their favourite items, toys, photographs etc. Please look out for a letter with further details.
