What are we learning about?
For the majority of the first half term in year 1, we will be focusing on 'Toys in Space' a story written by Mini Grey. We will be looking at old toys and new toys, focusing on their similarities and differences, for example material and condition. We we be learning all about materials in science and what would make the best waterproof coat for our toys.
In English we will create stories based on children's own experiences. We will learn the story 'Toys in Space,' describe the characters, we will then change elements of the story to write our own version. The children will focus on using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and sounding out their words to write.
In Maths we are going to continue learning about numbers. We will start off by understanding the symbols used when adding and subtracting. This will lead into the children adding and subtracting 1 digit numbers and using number bonds and related subtraction facts.
The children will be given many opportunities to solve problems related to the week’s learning.
Our lead subject will be History for this topic, focusing on toys then and now. The children will have many opportunities to explore non-fiction texts about this. The role play area will transform into a toy shop to encourage the children to describe the toys and what they are made of, handle money and price up items. We will be borrowing some old toys from the Hampshire Cultural Trust.
How can you help?
It is important that your child reads their book at least once a week and brings it back to school so we can monitor their progress. Children will have the chance to earn rewards through their bookmark; those reading regularly will also be rewarded with extra play on a Friday. Homework will be given out every Friday and asked to be returned the following Wednesday. This home learning will be linked to what your child has been learning about in school that week so discussing their home learning with them would be a great way to help with their speaking and listening skills too! Alongside this, spellings will be sent home for children to practice and bring back, ready to be tested.
