What are we learning about?

The children will be transformed into explorers and inventors through this half term’s topic.

This term we will be looking at Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We will be examining the text, exploring characters and using this in our own writing. The children will learn to put themselves in others shoes through role play and hot seating.

Later in the half-term we will be researching how chocolate is made and writing an explanation text about the chocolate making process.

At the start of this half term there will be focus on multiplication, division skills and mental addition and subtraction through puzzles and games. Moving onto beginning to look at equivalent and adding and subtracting fractions. We will also be investigating ‘time’ and looking at the different ways it is represented.

Through our topic work we will also be looking at the Mayan number system and trying to build number sentences using pictorial numerals!

Learning opportunities

Our main focus subjects will be History, Art and Science.

In History, we will be looking in detail at the Mayan culture and customs, spending time looking at the chronology of how and when this era fits in with Western history.

Time will be spent looking at the artistic techniques used by the Mayans and the children will design and create their own Day of the Dead Masks.

Science will consist of looking deeper into the human body at processes such as the digestive system and why having a healthy diet and exercise is beneficial.

How can you help?

Parents can support by encouraging children to read lots of information, webpages and books about Mayan, Inca and Aztec history. The Horrible Histories Mayan and Inca books are particularly good if you can find them in the library!

The Maya People

The Maya, accomplished astronomers and mathematicians, developed one of the most accurate calendar systems in human history.
