What are we learning about?
We will begin Year 1 by continuing the topic ‘Underwater World’ from Year R. This 2 week topic aims to help the children settle in and feel confident in their new environment. The children will begin to settle into their new routines in year 1.
We will be reading a book called ' Seahorse - The shyest fish in the sea' . We will be exploring this book, describing the seahorse and remembering the key facts. We will be writing key words and sentences about what we know.
In the first few weeks in year 1, the children will be focusing on number and place value. We will be looking at reading, writing and counting numbers up to 100. A big focus will be on building the children's independence by showing them where to find and how to use different resources.
The main focus for this first few weeks is to make sure all the children are settling in and understand the expectations and routines in year 1. The Underwater World topic will be taught through our Power of Reading text ' Seahorse- The shyest fish in the sea.'
How can you help?
Please feel free to find out facts about sea horses and other sea creatures ,with your child. It would be great to see these! Please encourage and support your child with their weekly homework. Your child will also be choosing a new reading book to take home, which they can read to and with you at home. Please ask them questions about what they have read. Every time your child finishes a book they can add a sticker to their book mark. A full book mark means a prize!!
